Wild Foodies Foraging Tour ‘Plants on the Pier’

June 15, 2024 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Online registration is now CLOSED. If you would like to attend, you can show up at the start location with $10 cash.

Tours in Philadelphia are not only about history and ghosts! With the greater number of guests to the city expected during the upcoming anniversaries and big events, the Association of Philadelphia Tour Guides (APT) would like to encourage members to expand the definition of tour and tour guide. Any exploration of the city in an area or field that you are passionate about can become a tour! A stellar example of this is APT corporate member Lady Danni Morinich’s wild foodies foraging tour ‘Plants on the Pier’ which she is leading privately for us on Saturday, June 15 from 10 am to 12 noon. Join us to explore the edible and medicinal uses of plants – available right under our feet in this urban environment – along with plant history, legend, and lore.

Washington Avenue Green is generally regarded as a path linking Washington Avenue and Pier 70, used by runners and cyclists. But this waterside locale is home to a myriad of wild, edible, and medicinal plants. We’ll start the tour where the trail begins, then we’ll proceed on the path, working our way down the pier covering the edible and medicinal uses of the plants, along with plant history, legend, and lore. We’ll be discussing uses of oak, redbud, holly, and mugwort. You’ll also be privy to the perfect spot to harvest mulberries a little later in the summer. And with a little luck, a few ripe juneberries.

Lady Danni Morinich is the Proprietress of Landed Gentress Handcrafted Herbals. She is passionate about foraging and using herbs and foraged finds in her creations. She is a member of the American Herbalist Guild and the American Botanical Council. She has a Master Herbalist diploma from the Centre of Excellence. She is a keen forager and member of Wild Foodies of Philadelphia, and has hosted tours for the Free Library of Philadelphia, Philadelphia Mural Arts program, and has been a partner in Painted Bride‘s Resistance Garden, where she hosted the Wild Plants from Sovereign Lands series of tours across community gardens in Philly.

The tour will begin at the trailhead, where Washington Avenue meets Columbus Boulevard, next to the Coast Guard Station (there is a sign marking the trail). There are 10 available slots. Cost is $10 per person and tickets can be purchased in the APT Store.

Although a lightning storm would precipitate rescheduling, this is a rain or shine event, so dress appropriately. If you’re running late, please catch up with us on the path, where we’ll be discussing the plants on the path’s edges, before walking in the length of the Pier.

Parking: Use the lot attached to the Dunkin’ Donuts across the street. Do not park in the lot for the Sheet Metal Workers Union as they close the gates when the credit union closes.

Please contact Marianne president@phillyguides.org with any questions or concerns. It’s a unique opportunity limited to 10 people – sign up today!
