On Wed. June 9, the Association of Philadelphia Tour Guides (APT) will kick off its monthly meeting at 7 pm with a talk by artist Carla Bednar, “American Flag: the Power and Passion of the Stars and Stripes.”

Carla Bednar is an artist, designer, arts educator, and world traveler. Her career includes teaching Pre-K through college, curating art in public and private spaces, traveling to experience the art, architecture, cuisine, and customs of different cultures, and much more.

After earning undergraduate and graduate degrees in art studio and arts education, she spent two years conducting post-graduate research at The Barnes Foundation.

Carla is a textile expert. For many years, she stewarded a university historical textile and costume collection, in which, in addition to day-to-day management, she created exhibitions, conserved and restored collection objects, conducted research, and hosted tours. A catalog she produced for an exhibition, “Lace in Translation,” was awarded first prize by the American Alliance of Museums. You may recognize a local project she worked on — 20 city recycling trucks decorated with vibrant textile-inspired images.

Today, after 30 years, she is back in her art studio creating wildly colorful paintings and drawings. She expects to be exhibiting her own work in a year or two!

Following the talk will be the APT meeting and some social time on zoom. APT meetings are open to aspiring and working tour guides as well as anyone with an interest in Philadelphia-focused history. For the foreseeable future all meetings are free for anyone and all are welcome!
