The Association of Philadelphia Tour Guides (APT) has arranged for a how-to session with Bill Caldwell of Compass US Accountants and Advisors “LLC or Not – That is the question!” It is a complimentary Zoom session on Tuesday, July 1, at 4 pm ET. After APT held a session last April on “How To Get Started as a Tour Guide,” several members followed up with questions about starting their own 1-person tour company LLCs (limited liability company). The rules for forming an LLC do not really vary by state. Filings are different in each state in terms of filing fees (which are generally fairly nominal) and any annual reports that need to be submitted for the LLC, but the actual formation is quite standard. So no matter where you are working as a tour guide, this advice can help you.

The benefits of the LLC are many fold, starting with protecting personal assets. If the business were to be sued for some reason, only the assets of the business can be touched. Some guides have found the tax burden to be more reasonable than self-employment tax.
