SUMMARY:HISTORY MATTERS: Free Talks by Tour Guides
DESCRIPTION:Members of the Association of Philadelphia Tour Guides (APT) will present a teach-in\, HISTORY MATTERS: Free Talks with Tour Guides\, at various sites within Independence National Historic Park (INHP) on Saturday\, March 21 from 1-4 pm. These free\, short significant snippets of history will include the history of Blacks and other marginalized groups. Participants can follow a route that starts at the Visitor Center\, continues past the President’s House\, Liberty Bell Center\, and goes along Chestnut Street to Congress Hall\, Independence Hall\, and Old City Hall. They can visit all five stops or take in as many as time and interest allow. The stories at each site are not sequential. \nThose who would like a little extra explanation and some camaraderie can join free tours that will leave the Independence Visitor Center at 1:15\, 2:15\, and 3:15 pm to escort guests around to all five sites. Look for the APT table and ‘Ask Me’ name tags! \nThis public education program is APT’s response to the March 27\, 2025 executive order “Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History.” This order directed the secretary of the Department of the Interior to make sure that displays at national parks do not “inappropriately disparage Americans past or living (including persons living in colonial times).” Instead\, he said\, they are to “focus on the greatness of the achievements and progress of the American people.” \nTo make sure the full American history is not lost or forgotten\, guides will discuss true stories about colonial slavery\, Black resistance and self-determination\, and other underrepresented narratives in early American life. The public is encouraged to attend the HISTORY MATTERS: Free Talks with Tour Guides to learn a more complete account of our country’s history. \nThe event is free\, nonpartisan\, and family-friendly. No registration is required. All are welcome!

SUMMARY:Book Club for March
DESCRIPTION:The Association of Philadelphia Tour Guides (APT) will hold its next book club meeting on Tuesday\, March 17 at 7 pm on Zoom. There is no fee to attend and everyone is welcome. Participants should come ready to discuss the book. The selection is The Power to Deny by APT’s own Wendy Long Stanley. \nIt is not uncommon for people to live in Horsham or some place very near Horsham for years and years before they somehow happen to discover Graeme Park. But when Wendy Stanley moved here from Canada almost 20 years go\, it took her only a few weeks to find it and only minutes to become excited about it. She learned a bit about Elizabeth Graeme’s life as a privileged but restricted woman of the eighteenth century and started to write a novel about her. Wendy describes her book\, The Power to Deny\, as historical fiction. But it is hardly fiction at all. There is very little in it that is not documented or did not actually happen. \nThat is because Wendy did such extensive\, detailed research about her subject. She visited Elizabeth-related sites in Philadelphia – her burial site at Christ Church\, the graveyard at Old Swedes Church where Graeme and Henry Fergusson were married\, the house where her sister Jane lived\, as well as lots of libraries and\, of course\, Graeme Park. While poring through an original journal at the Pennsylvania Historical Society library\, written in solitude with a quill pen by Elizabeth’s own hand\, a pressed flower fell out of the pages. It had been there nearly three centuries! \nElizabeth’s life story seems a natural for a novel\, considering her struggles in romance\, as a writer\, as a property owner during the Revolutionary War\, and generally as a female during that turbulent era. Wendy put it all together in this book\, which took her eight years of working in solitude at her computer\, when time away from juggling all of the obligations of life as a 21st century wife\, mother\, and employee would allow\, to write. \nThe Zoom link will be sent out the week of the meeting in the APT Tour Talk email. Non-members who wish to attend should contact APT Secretary Pam Covey phillyguides@gmail.com by 5 pm the day of the meeting to get the Zoom link.

SUMMARY:Hannah Callowhill Penn
DESCRIPTION:The next monthly meeting of the Association of Philadelphia Tour Guides (APT) will be held on Wednesday\, March 11 at 7 pm. In celebration of Women’s History Month\, we’ll learn more about William Penn’s second wife\, Hannah (née Callowhill) from Doug Miller\, the museum director of Pennsbury Manor\, a reconstruction of William Penn’s country estate in Morrisville\, PA. Doug will discuss the trials and triumphs of this extraordinary woman who ran the government for six years after Penn suffered a stroke and for eight years after he died. \nHannah Penn would serve as Pennsylvania’s first female governor\, although she was never granted the title. Born into a wealthy family of first-generation Quakers\, friend Hannah would eventually marry Pennsylvania’s founder\, William Penn. Theirs would be a union that would influence the world we live in today. Hear about her leadership when Penn is debilitated by stroke\, her conflict with her stepson\, the loss of her beloved mother\, the boundary battle with Maryland\, and even a tidbit about her courtship with Penn. \nCome early for dinner and drinks! The meeting will be in-person at Philly’s Gourmet Steaks\, 114 Market Street\, upstairs\, and livestreamed on Zoom. The Zoom link will be available in the APT Tour Talk newsletter the week of the meeting; non-members should contact Marianne Ruane president@phillyguides.org no later than 5 pm the day of the meeting to receive the link. A recording will be available on the APT YouTube page for a month following the talk. \nAPT meetings are open to aspiring and working tour guides as well as anyone with an interest in Philadelphia-focused history. Attend one meeting for free and then it is $60 to join the association for the year or $10 per monthly meeting in-person event. Zoom meetings are free. Please join us for convivial company\, good food\, fascinating presentations\, and lively discussions! \n\n\n \n

SUMMARY:Mummer Fun
DESCRIPTION:The Association of Philadelphia Tour Guides (APT) is offering a tour of the Mummers Museum followed by a unique behind-the-scenes visit to one of the Mummers’ spectacular performing arts clubs\, the Golden Sunrise New Year’s Association. The tour is hosted by APT’s own Golden Sunrise Mummer\, Jenn Hensell. \nThe 2-part tour begins Sunday February 15 at 11 am from the Mummers Museum\, 1100 S 2nd St. After about 45 minutes there\, we will walk the .4 miles to the home of Golden Sunrise NYA\, 230 Greenwich St. in south Philadelphia. We will be there about 30 minutes. Participants should plan about 1.5 hours total. \nThe discounted cost is $7 payable in the APT Store. If you have any questions\, contact APT Director-at-Large Vince McCafferty vpmccafferty@msn.com. \nGolden Sunrise NYA is a mummer club in the Fancy Division of the Philadelphia Mummers Parade. As a fancy club\, it is focused on building and displaying elaborate parade suits\, especially frame suits (floats) and backpieces (costumes with a wearable steel armature) decked out in full mummer regalia of satin\, sequins\, and feathers. Since 2014 Golden Sunrise has been the last remaining club in Fancy Division. \nIn 2017 Golden Sunrise established a 501(c)(3) arm of its organization dedicated to preservation and education in Fancy Division mummery. Its goal is to preserve this Philadelphia folk art while engaging an ever wider base of participation across the city. \nCheck out the photos from an APT visit in 2023!

SUMMARY:Meet Moses Williams
DESCRIPTION:At the next monthly meeting for the Association of Philadelphia Tour Guides (APT)\, on February 11 at 7 pm\, Faye Anderson will make a presentation\, “Meet Moses Williams.” Born into slavery in the household of painter Charles Willson Peale\, Moses Williams was the first Black museum professional and master silhouette artist whose story is buried in the archives. To raise awareness of Williams and his contribution to 19th century visual culture\, Faye nominated Williams for a Pennsylvania historical marker. Williams’ marker will be dedicated in 2026\, the 250th anniversary of his birth. \nFaye will also provide an overview of the historical marker nomination process. \nFaye Anderson is the director of All That Philly Jazz\, a place-based public history project that is mapping Philadelphia’s lost jazz venues and landmarks and documenting the social history of jazz. Drawing on archival materials and oral histories\, she uncovers hidden and forgotten stories. Faye leads walking tours about Billie Holiday\, Green Book sites\, and jazz history in Center City\, North Philly\, and West Philly. \nFaye recently curated an exhibit on Black music from the 1770s to the 1970s for the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. She also nominated jazz trumpeter Lee Morgan for a Pennsylvania historical marker. The marker was dedicated on International Jazz Day 2024. She successfully nominated Morgan’s masterpiece\, The Sidewinder\, for listing in the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress. \nFaye is a graduate of Stanford University. She earned a Certificate in French Proficiency from Université Cheikh Anta Diop de Dakar\, Sénégal. \nThe meeting will be in-person at Philly’s Gourmet Steaks\, 114 Market Street\, upstairs\, and livestreamed on Zoom. The Zoom link will be available in the APT Tour Talk newsletter the week of the meeting; non-members should contact Marianne Ruane president@phillyguides.org no later than 5 pm the day of the meeting to receive the link.\n \nCredit: Silhouette of Moses Williams/The Library Company of Philadelphia

SUMMARY:January Book Club
DESCRIPTION:The Association of Philadelphia Tour Guides (APT) will hold its next Zoom book club meeting on Tuesday\, January 20 at 7 pm. All are welcome to attend. \nThe January 2026 Book Club selection will be Complicity: How the North Promoted\, Prolonged\, and Profited from Slavery by Anne Farrow\, Joel Lang\, and Jenifer Frank of The Hartford Courant.  The North’s profit from and dependence on slavery has been a well-kept and shameful secret. Complicity reveals the cruel truth about the lucrative “Triangle Trade” of molasses\, rum\, and slaves  that linked the North to the West Indies and Africa. It also discloses the reality of Northern empires built on tainted profits — run in some cases by abolitionists — and exposes northern plantations as well. \n\n\nCulled from long-ignored documents and reports—and bolstered by rarely seen photos\, publications\, maps\, and period drawings—Complicity is a fascinating and sobering work that actually does what so many books pretend to do: shed light on America’s past.\n\n\n\n\nAPT members will find Zoom details in the Tour Talk newsletter the week of the meeting. Non-APT members who would like to participate in the January book club should email APT Secretary Pam Covey at secretary@phillyguides.org no later than 5 pm the day of the meeting to receive the Zoom link.  Please join us!

SUMMARY:Introduction to Disability Inclusion for Tour Guides
DESCRIPTION:The Association of Philadelphia Tour Guides (APT) has arranged for a free Zoom webinar\, “Introduction to Disability Inclusion for Tour Guides\,” on Tuesday\, December 9 at 7 pm. What role does disability inclusion play in guiding travelers with disabilities? VisitAble is on a mission to enable a better experience for individuals with disabilities. VisitAble’s founder\, Joe Jamison\, will be giving a presentation to share information on important interpersonal best practices\, easy tips for increasing accessibility\, important statistics\, and much more! Whether you are well-versed in accessibility or haven’t yet started to think about disability inclusion\, this presentation will be a great way for you to improve your disability awareness. \nThis presentation launches VisitAble’s self-paced training and certification program. This 60-minute certificate course further builds confidence in serving travelers with all disability types. Learn updated language\, common mistakes\, interaction best practices\, and accessibility tips specifically for tour guides. Those who attend will receive both a certificate of completion as well as an email signature badge that you can proudly display. \nAPT members can pre-purchase the program for 15% off the regular price ($85 instead of the usual $100) from December 9\, 2025 through January 31\, 2026. (Those who are NOT APT members can purchase the program here.) The program will be released February 2\, 2026\, possibly sooner – APT guides are the program’s inaugural class! Participants will have until February 2\, 2027 to complete the program. This is a really great opportunity for APT guides to learn how to create inclusive tours while gaining an important credential. We want absolutely every visitor to Philadelphia for the big anniversaries in 2026 and beyond to feel welcome! \nThe presentation will be led by Joe Jamison\, who is a Certified Professional in Accessibility Core Competencies (CPACC) and the CEO and Founder of VisitAble LLC. Joe’s father has used a wheelchair for his entire life\, and Joe noticed how his father was treated differently from the rest of his family and that the world was not designed for people with disabilities in mind. He founded VisitAble to create more welcoming and inclusive experiences for all\, by working to remove barriers and change attitudes related to disability. \nBe sure to RSVP below for this free webinar. The Zoom link will be sent out to all who register a day or two before. A recording of the presentation will be up for 2 weeks following the webinar\, through December 23. The link in the APT Store to purchase the program will go live on December 9. Whether you plan to do the certification or not\, the webinar includes an abundance of insightful information that will change how you view guests with disabilities. This one is a must! Please join us.

SUMMARY:The Bank War
DESCRIPTION:TICKET SALES WILL END AT 6 PM ON NOVEMBER 19. If you miss the cut off\, email Marianne president@phillyguides.org to purchase the recording. It will be available the following week.  \nFollowing on the heels of the weekend  Training Program “19th Century Growing Pains or We The People… Now What?“\, the Association of Philadelphia Tour Guides (APT) is offering a Zoom webinar on the Bank War with independent historian Andrew Tremel. \nIn 1816\, Congress established the Second Bank of the United States to help the country navigate the economic challenges that followed the War of 1812. Like its predecessor\, the Bank of the United States founded by Alexander Hamilton in 1791\, the Second Bank’s headquarters was in Philadelphia. Also like it’s predecessor\, it was controversial. Though the bank was stable–and had kept the country on stable financial footing through the 1820s–Andrew Jackson sought to undermine the institution during his presidency. The story of the Bank War is a tale of the tension between Congress and the presidency\, the powers of the national executive\, the impact of governing decisions on the national economy\, and a transition in Philadelphia’s stature as a commercial center in the young United States. \nAndrew Tremel has a master’s degree in history from Kent State University. His writing\, some of which focuses on Philadelphia\, has appeared in Pennsylvania History\, Legacy magazine\, and the Encyclopedia of Greater Philadelphia. In addition to his work as an independent scholar\, Andrew also has spent his career in historical interpretation and research  with the National Park Service and the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center. Andrew and his family live in Springfield\, Virginia. \nCost is $5 for APT members and $8 for non-members. The link will be sent out to registrants the day before the event. \nMany of us walk by the Second Bank while on tour – it will be great to have some more stories to tell! Please join us.

SUMMARY:November Book Club
DESCRIPTION:The Association of Philadelphia Tour Guides (APT) will hold its next Zoom book club meeting on Tuesday\, November 18 at 7 pm. All are welcome to attend. \nBy popular vote\, the November Book Club Selection will be Treacherous Beauty: Peggy Shippen\, the Woman Behind Benedict Arnold’s Plot to Betray America by Mark Jacob and Stephen H. Case.  Treacherous Beauty tells the true story of Peggy Shippen\, a driving force in a conspiracy that came within an eyelash of dooming the American democracy. This book is 288 pages long (not a tome) and provides a fascinating look at Philadelphia during and after the British occupation.  This selection also dovetails nicely with Valiant Ambition for those of you who want to do some extra credit work on the side. \nHistories of the Revolutionary War have long honored heroines such as Betsy Ross\, Abigail Adams\, and Molly Pitcher. Now\, more than two centuries later\, comes the first biography of one of the war’s most remarkable women\, a beautiful Philadelphia society woman named Peggy Shippen. While war was raging between England and its rebellious colonists\, Peggy befriended a suave British officer and then married a crippled revolutionary general twice her age. She brought the two men together in a treasonous plot that nearly turned George Washington into a prisoner and changed the course of the war. Peggy Shippen was Mrs. Benedict Arnold. \nAfter the conspiracy was exposed\, Peggy managed to convince powerful men like Washington and Alexander Hamilton of her innocence. The Founding Fathers were handicapped by the common view that women lacked the sophistication for politics or warfare\, much less treason. And Peggy took full advantage. \nPeggy was to the American Revolution what the fictional Scarlett O’Hara was to the Civil War: a woman whose survival skills trumped all other values. Had she been a man\, she might have been arrested\, tried\, and executed. And she might have become famous. Instead\, her role was minimized and she was allowed to recede into the background—with a generous British pension in hand. \nAPT members will find Zoom details in the Tour Talk newsletter the week of the meeting. Non-APT members who would like to participate in the November book club should email APT Secretary Pam Covey at secretary@phillyguides.org no later than 5 pm the day of the meeting to receive the Zoom link.  Please join us!

SUMMARY:19th C. Growing Pains: Visit to the Independence Seaport Museum
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT IS SOLD OUT. \nAs part of its 2025 Fall Training Program\, 19th Century Growing Pains or We The People… Now What?\, the Association of Philadelphia Tour Guides (APT) is offering a Visit to the Independence Seaport Museum\, Sunday\, November 16 from 11 am – 12 pm. The group will walk over together following the morning’s panel discussion; those not attending the morning discussion can meet us at Philly’s Gourmet Steaks at 10:30 am to walk over with us or meet us at the museum at 10:45 am.\n\nWhile attendees will be able to visit all of the exhibits in the museum\, we will mostly focus our attention on the museum’s second floor exhibit\, “Tides of Freedom: African-American Presence on the Delaware River.” This exhibit was curated by Dr. Tukufu Zuberi\, one of our speakers for the morning discussion on the parallel lives of James Forten and Stephen Girard. Focusing on four critical periods in Philadelphia’s history: Enslavement\, Emancipation\, Jim Crow\, and Civil Rights\, “Tides of Freedom” urges visitors to think about the concept of freedom both historically and in today’s world through the lens of the African experience along the Delaware. \nThis event is included in the complete package. To purchase a ticket individually\, the cost is $5 member/ $10 non-member. It is such a wonderful under-the-radar museum; we used special pricing to make sure as many people as possible have the chance to visit it. Regular admission is $23. This covers all indoor exhibits. To tour the Olympia (self-guided) is an additional $15 paid individually. To tour the submarine Becuna (guided tours at 11 am\, 1 pm\, and 3 pm) is an additional $10 paid individually. (Tell the cashier that you are with APT as this is a special rate for us.) \nCheck out the complete training program description to figure out the best combination of events and pricing for you. The full package of a possible 9 events PLUS a full day bus tour to Fairmount Park is ($100 member/ $150 non-member)\, or you may prefer to choose individual tour or lecture events ($15 member/$25 non-member) with or without the full bus day ($50/$70). \nThis museum is truly a hidden gem in Philadelphia. Join us to check it out and recommend it to your guests on tour! \nImage from Visit Philly

SUMMARY:19th C. Growing Pains: The Parallel Lives of James Forten and Stephen Girard
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT IS SOLD OUT. \nAs part of its 2025 Fall Training Program\, 19th Century Growing Pains or We The People… Now What?\, the Association of Philadelphia Tour Guides (APT) is offering a talk about The Parallel Lives of James Forten and Stephen Girard on Sunday\, November 16 from 9-10:30 am at Philly’s Gourmet Steaks on the 2nd floor. \nThis talk\, led by Katherine Haas\, Director of Historical Resources at Girard College and Dr. Tukufu Zuberi\, the Lasry Family Professor of Race Relations and Professor of Sociology and Africana Studies at the University of Pennsylvania\, will cover Stephen Girard and James Forten\, both self-made men who achieved enormous wealth in the maritime trade in Philadelphia during the 19th century. Both were well-regarded by many across racial and social divides\, with thousands attending each of their funerals. While both were philanthropic\, their causes and reasoning for support differed greatly. \nStephen Girard – merchant\, banker and landowner – was the wealthiest man in American when he died in 1831. In an unprecedented act of philanthropy\, he left his fortune to establish Girard College\, originally endowed to educate “poor\, white male orphans.”  This presentation will offer a glimpse into the complex life of America’s first multi-millionaire and illuminate the legacy of a school which has fascinated visitors since the 19th century. \nIt turns out that besides being parallel\, their lives also intersected: Girard did not buy his sails from Forten’s shop\, but Forten did business at Girard’s Bank. A check signed by Forten is in the Girard College collection! The full package of a possible 9 events PLUS a full day bus tour to Fairmount Park is ($100/$150/$270)\, or you may prefer to choose individual tour or lecture events ($15 member/$25 non-member) with or without the full bus day ($50/$70). \nPlease join us!

DESCRIPTION:ONLINE SALES HAVE ENDED FOR THIS EVENT. If you would like to attend\, you can pay cash to Marianne\, $15 member and $25 non-member\, exact change only.  \nAs part of its 2025 Fall Training Program\, 19th Century Growing Pains or We The People… Now What?\, the Association of Philadelphia Tour Guides (APT) is offering an Old City in the 19th Century Walking Tour on Thursday\, November 13 from 2-4 pm\, beginning at Arch Street Meeting House (320 Arch Street) and ending near Christ Church (20 N. American Street). \nCharlene Mires\, APT member and certified tour guide with Preservation Alliance\, Independence Historical Trust\, Scholastica\, Mural Arts\, and Context Travel will show us Old City in a new light as we shift attention to its 19th century history of industry\, commerce\, immigration\, and social change. Old City is perhaps the one area of Philadelphia which most vividly exhibits the social\, economic\, and architectural changes which have comprised the three hundred years of the city’s history. At first glance\, Old City may appear to be a somewhat motley group of 19th century commercial loft buildings\, and in fact it contains one of the largest and most valuable collections of these structures in the country. But there is much more here than initially meets the eye. Come walk with us to explore Old City from a 19th century perspective. \nCheck out the complete training program description to figure out the best combination of events and pricing for you. The full package of a possible 9 events PLUS a full day bus tour to Fairmount Park is ($100/$150/$270)\, or you may prefer to choose individual tour or lecture events ($15 member/$25 non-member) with or without the full bus day ($50/$70). \nThis tour is also offered on Thursday\, November 13.\nAlso offered in this time slot is: Historic District with Guiding Basic Walking Tour \nIt’s a great professional development opportunity – please join us!

SUMMARY:19th C. Growing Pains: Philadelphia Before the Civil War
DESCRIPTION:ONLINE SALES HAVE ENDED FOR THIS EVENT. If you would like to attend\, you can pay cash at the door\, $15 member and $25 non-member\, exact change only.  \nAs part of its 2025 Fall Training Program\, 19th Century Growing Pains or We The People… Now What?\, the Association of Philadelphia Tour Guides (APT) is offering a Lunch & Learn Talk: Philadelphia Before the Civil War on Saturday\, November 15 from 12:30-1:30 p.m. at Mother Bethel AME Church (419 6th St.). \nWilliam Penn meant well\, but his City of Brotherly Love never really had a chance. By the turn of the 19th century\, Philadelphia was home to slaves and slave owners. It was considered the most conservative city in the country. It was a city that hosted immigrants and American Nativists. It was a divided city that voted for Abraham Lincoln in 1860. It was a vibrant city\, the second largest in America. This talk is an overview of the 19th century evolution of Philadelphia up to and including the Civil War. Talk will be given by APT member Jim Mundy\, certified tour guide and former historian of the Union League. \nOur lunch is provided courtesy of Miles Table. (If you need help with Thanksgiving dinner\, check out their catering options!) There will be sandwiches\, salad\, gluten free and vegetarian/vegan options as well as fruit\, baked goods\, and cold drinks. Let’s all give a BIG shout out to Mike Lynch and his team!!!\n\nPlease note that a free Tour of Mother Bethel AME Church from 11:30-12:30 pm will precede the Lunch & Learn. \nCheck out the complete training program description to figure out the best combination of events and pricing for you.
