SUMMARY:How To Decide if an LLC is Right for You
DESCRIPTION:The Association of Philadelphia Tour Guides (APT) has arranged for a how-to session with Bill Caldwell of Compass US Accountants and Advisors “LLC or Not – That is the question!” It is a complimentary Zoom session on Tuesday\, July 1\, at 4 pm ET. After APT held a session last April on “How To Get Started as a Tour Guide\,” several members followed up with questions about starting their own 1-person tour company LLCs (limited liability company). If you would like to know the benefit of forming an LLC\, whether or not it is for you\, and how to get started – this webinar is for you! The rules for forming an LLC do not really vary by state. Filings are different in each state in terms of filing fees (which are generally fairly nominal) and any annual reports that need to be submitted for the LLC\, but the actual formation is quite standard. So no matter where you are working as a tour guide\, this advice can help you. \n\n\n\nThe benefits of the LLC are many fold\, starting with protecting personal assets. If the business were to be sued for some reason\, only the assets of the business can be touched. Some guides have found the tax burden to be more reasonable than self-employment tax. \n\n\n\nAs a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) with more than 35 years of experience\, William (Bill) Caldwell\, CPA has developed a deep understanding of financial principles\, taxation laws\, and business strategies. \n\n\n\nOver the years\, Bill’s had the privilege of working with diverse clients across different industries\, including small businesses\, corporations\, non-profit organizations\, and high-net-worth individuals. Through proactive financial planning\, strategic tax management\, and sound business advice\, he has helped clients navigate complex financial challenges\, optimize their resources\, and achieve their long-term goals. In addition to serving clients\, he also built a CPA practice that has been recognized by the Washington Business Journal as a Top 50 Firm in the DCA area. \n\n\n\nBill is a dynamic and sought-after speaker known for his captivating presentations that inspire and empower audiences across many industries. With a unique blend of expertise\, charisma\, and passion\, he has established himself as a leading voice on tax matters. He was immensely helpful to tour guides during the confusion of Covid and presented last January at the NFTGA conference in Philadelphia. To register and receive the Zoom link\, contact Marianne Ruane president@phillyguides.org. It is sure to be a dynamic\, informative session – please join us! \n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:The Life of John Dickinson
DESCRIPTION:The Association of Philadelphia Tour Guides (APT) will hold its next monthly meeting on Wednesday\, July 9 at 7 pm. July’s speaker will be Doug Thomas of Historic Philadelphia\, Inc. who will tell us about the life of John Dickinson\, the “Penman of the Revolution”\, who opposed independence from Britain but supported the rights of the colonists. \nIn the decade before the American colonies declared independence\, no patriot enjoyed greater renown than John Dickinson. In 1765 he helped lead opposition to the Stamp Act\, Britain’s first effort to get colonists to cover part of the mounting cost of the empire through taxes on paper and printed materials. When Parliament passed the Townshend Duties of 1767\, Dickinson galvanized colonial resistance by penning Letters from a Farmer in Pennsylvania\, a series of impassioned essays widely read on both sides of the Atlantic. Upon hearing of his death\, Thomas Jefferson said: ”His name will be consecrated in history as one of the great worthies of the revolution.” \nLong-time Dickinson portrayer\, Doug Thomas – as himself\, not in character – will talk about Dickinson’s history and what aspects of this forgotten founder he most enjoys sharing. For almost 30 years\, Thomas has been portraying people from American history\, using their stories to entertain\, inspire\, and educate thousands. \nThomas routinely performs for corporate events\, universities\, international tour groups\, patriotic organizations\, schools\, and libraries\, and has had the honor of entertaining Presidents of the United States as well as CEOs of Fortune 500 companies. You can often see him in action at famous locations which include Valley Forge National Historical Park\, Independence Hall in Philadelphia\, Mount Vernon in Virginia\, and the National Archives in Washington\, DC. \nOver the years\, Doug has personally developed and portrayed more than 20 famous characters from history\, from the American Revolution into the early 19th century. As the Director of History Makers for Historic Philadelphia\, Inc.\, he directs and trains others in first person interpretation\, writes scripts\, and works with the program team to vet content for historical accuracy. \nIn designing historical programs\, Doug’s mission is to inspire people and organizations to connect with the past in an entertaining and engaging way\, allowing them to create the skills\, knowledge\, and teamwork that will move them forward and give them hope for the future. \nThe meeting will held in-person at 114 Market Street on the 2nd floor of Philly’s Gourmet Steaks. Come early for dinner and drinks! The meeting will also be livestreamed on Zoom. \nThe Zoom link will be shared in the APT Tour Talk newsletter the week of the meeting. Non-members should email Marianne Ruane at president@phillyguides.org no later than 5 pm the day of the meeting to receive the Zoom link. A recording will be available on the APT YouTube page for a month following the talk. \nAPT meetings are open to aspiring and working tour guides as well as anyone with an interest in Philadelphia-focused history. Attend one meeting for free and then it is $60 to join the association for the year or $10 per monthly meeting in-person event. Zoom meetings are free. Please join us for convivial company\, good food\, fascinating presentations\, and lively discussions.

DESCRIPTION:The Association of Philadelphia Tour Guides (APT) is organizing a field trip to the Hagley Museum in Wilmington\, Delaware on July 10\, 10 am – 3 pm. Let’s cross state lines and enjoy some time together\, while exploring the magnificent Hagley Museum located in the heart of the Brandywine Valley\, a.k.a. chateaux country. We’ll step into the rich legacy of the DuPont family and visit the site of the family’s original gunpowder manufacturing mill\, founded by E.I. DuPont in 1802. The Hotel\, a twelve-story Italian Renaissance masterpiece\, was built in 1913. Its grand lobby has been restored\, with a successful and stunning mix of old and new. Lunch is on our own. \nIf time permits\, we’ll leave there and walk to Market Street where we can stroll and take in the vibrant Renaissance vibes while getting a glimpse of the local businesses\, award-winning restaurants\, the Grand Opera\, the Archives\, the Historical Society\, awesome architecture\, art galleries\, and the locals of course! \nTo register\, pay $20 in the APT Store and email your tour guide and outing organizer\, APT member Annie Leguennec ann.leguenn9@gmail.com. SUMMARY:July Book Club
DESCRIPTION:The Association of Philadelphia Tour Guides (APT) will hold its next Zoom book club meeting on Tuesday\, July 15 at 7 pm. All are welcome to attend. July’s book club choice is Travels with George: In Search of Washington and His Legacy by Nathaniel Philbrick. \nWhen George Washington became president in 1789\, the United States of America was still a loose and quarrelsome confederation and a tentative political experiment. Washington undertook a tour of the ex-colonies to talk to ordinary citizens about his new government\, and to imbue in them the idea of being one thing—Americans. \nIn the fall of 2018\, Nathaniel Philbrick embarked on his own journey into what Washington called “the infant woody country” to see for himself what America had become in the 229 years since. Writing in a thoughtful first person about his own adventures with his wife\, Melissa\, and their dog\, Dora\, Philbrick follows Washington’s presidential excursions: from Mount Vernon to the new capital in New York; a monthlong tour of Connecticut\, Massachusetts\, New Hampshire\, and Rhode Island; a venture onto Long Island and eventually across Georgia\, South Carolina\, and North Carolina. The narrative moves smoothly between the eighteenth and twenty-first centuries as we see the country through both Washington’s and Philbrick’s eyes. \nAPT members will find Zoom details in the Tour Talk newsletter the week of the meeting. Non-APT members who would like to participate in the May book club should email APT Secretary Pam Covey at secretary@phillyguides.org no later than 5 pm the day of the meeting to receive the Zoom link.  Please join us! \n\n\n\nAdd to calendar

SUMMARY:Tour of the President's House
DESCRIPTION:Join the Association of Philadelphia Tour Guides (APT) and historian and APT member Charlene Mires for a tour of the President’s House site on Wednesday\, August 13 from 5-6 pm (preceding the monthly APT meeting at Philly’s Gourmet Steaks). Given the recent presidential directive to review anything in national parks that can be construed as ‘disparaging’ to the U.S. and its founders\, particularly slavery\, it is crucial that APT members understand the significance of this memorial and all it represents to be able to pass that knowledge on and keep the history alive. \nThe President’s House site is not only an important historic place and outdoor exhibit – but  also a monument to contemporary civic activism and social justice. Learn more about the background of this unique memorial while exploring the site with Charlene\, who served on the City of Philadelphia Oversight Committee for the President’s House/Slavery Commemoration Project from 2005 until the site’s dedication in 2010. During this tour and discussion\, you will discover why the site’s various elements exist\, gain insight into often-overlooked features\, and envision ways to engage visitors with the powerful story of freedom and enslavement during Philadelphia’s decade as the nation’s capital. \nCharlene Mires is a historian\, certified tour guide\, and author of the book Independence Hall in American Memory. She is one of the founding editors of The Encyclopedia of Greater Philadelphia\, based at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Center for the Humanities (MARCH) at Rutgers University-Camden. \nWe’ll meet at the site on the corner of 6th and Market Streets. There is no charge for the tour but please register with APT Vice President Mike Teti vicepresident@phillyguides.org. It’s an important opportunity – be sure to join us!

SUMMARY:Lucretia Mott: Revolutionary Voice for Women's Rights & Abolition
DESCRIPTION:To commemorate the 105th anniversary of the 19th Amendment\, the Association of Philadelphia Tour Guides (APT) will kick off its next monthly meeting on Wednesday\, August 13 at 7 pm with a presentation on Lucretia Coffin Mott by Kim Hanley\, historian and first person interpreter. A Quaker minister and tireless reformer\, Mott was a leading voice in both the women’s rights and abolition movements. She helped found the Philadelphia Female Anti-Slavery Society\, co-organized the historic 1848 Seneca Falls Women’s Rights Convention\, and advocated the use of Free Produce. \nShe was elected as an American Representative to the 1840 General (or World’s) Anti-Slavery Convention. When women were excluded from participating and were required to sit in a segregated area\, Mott began to realize that she must also muster her efforts towards women’s equality. Mott joined Elizabeth Cady Stanton in calling together the first women’s rights convention in Seneca Falls\, NY. Though she didn’t live to see women gain the right to vote\, Mott’s legacy as a champion of equality influenced generations of activists\, including Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony. \nWhile an anti-war activist\, Mott did support Camp William Penn (which was associated with her family through her son-in-law) insofar as she visited the soldiers\, spoke to them\, brought care packages\, etc. It was probably a source of inner conflict for her\, for herself she could never accept engaging in armed combat as a means to a solution. Yet\, she certainly understood that others did not necessarily hold her Quaker understanding of pacifism\, and she had to accept her personal sorrow that the soldiers there were so downtrodden that they felt they had no other recourse and were led to fight for their own liberty. She never gave up hope for a world free from the sins of both slavery and war\, and never ceased her efforts to help others see that truth. \nThe words and lessons of Lucretia Mott continue to open minds and hearts to a simple truth: If we embrace the inner light within ourselves\, we fan the flame in others\, and in time mankind will come to the full understanding that all people are created divine and equal.   \nKim Hanley’s academic training includes a BFA in Restoration and History of Applied Arts from the Fashion Institute of Technology\, State University of New York. Kim is an actor\, singer\, costumer\, and dancer who trained and performed from an early age with the School of American Ballet and the Eglevsky Ballet in New York\, as well as with the visiting Bolshoi Ballet\, Stuttgart Ballet. Kim is also an accomplished costumer whose specialty is historical fashion. She has costumed for many of the nation’s top historical interpreters and historical sites such as George Washington’s Mount Vernon. On a lighter note\, she includes among her “bigger” clients The Philly Phanatic. \nKim began interpreting Abigail Adams with American Historical Theatre (AHT) in 1997. She has appeared in the White House Visitors Center\, National Archives in Washington\, DC and NYC\, National Portrait Gallery\, Fraunces Tavern Museum at Trinity Church in NYC\, Philadelphia Museum of Art\, Franklin Institute\, National Constitution Center\, Independence Visitors Center\, Museum of the American Revolution\, Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge\, Pennsylvania Historical Society\, Durham Museum\, Mount Rushmore\, Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace\, Delaware Humanities Forum Chautauqua\, and many other historical and educational institutions throughout New Jersey and the Greater Philadelphia area. \nIn addition to Lucretia Mott\, Kim’s character portrayals include: Abigail Adams\, Annie Oakley\, Mary Young Pickersgill\, Betsy Ross\, Molly Pitcher (Mary Ludwig Hayes McCauley)\, Harriet Beecher Stowe\, Alice Roosevelt Longworth\, Alice Roosevelt’s maid Anna\, Abby Aldrich Rockefeller\, and Grace Coolidge. \nThe meeting will be in-person at Philly’s Gourmet Steaks\, 114 Market Street\, upstairs\, and livestreamed on Zoom. Come early for dinner and drinks! The Zoom link will be available in the APT Tour Talk newsletter the week of the meeting; non-members should contact Marianne Ruane president@phillyguides.org no later than 5 pm the day of the meeting to receive the link.

SUMMARY:Terrible-Tempered Lieutenant Levy Tour
DESCRIPTION:“I believed him to be quarrelsome and insubordinate.“\n— Commt. E.A.F. Lavalette\, USN \nAssociation of Philadelphia Tour Guides (APT) corporate member Fayge Horesh of Offbeat Philly has offered to do a complimentary walking tour for APT members. With Homecoming 250 right around the corner\, this is the best time to learn about this War of 1812 hero who is prominently displayed on 5th Street in front of Mikveh Israel. The first Jewish Commodore of the U.S. Navy\, Uriah Levy\, is remembered for ending the practice of flogging in the Navy. Less known was his fight against antisemitism\, whether that fight was in a courtroom or with his fists. \nLevy’s story includes pirates\, founding fathers\, and tenacity in the face of prejudice. His story will have you laughing and cheering as we enjoy sites along the beautiful Delaware River. We will meet at the corner of 2nd Street and Elfreth’s Alley (133 N 2nd Street for GPS) and finish at A Man Full of Trouble Tavern\, Philadelphia’s only original pre-revolutionary tavern\, which is still standing. Those who wish can stay longer for a drink or to explore the exhibits at the tavern. \nThe tour is complimentary but please register with Fayge in advance. It’s a great opportunity to learn some good naval info in advance of Homecoming 250 – always nice to throw some stories in for our navy and marine-themed guests even if you are not doing tours specifically geared to them. It’s a must for anyone who does tours in Old City!

SUMMARY:Lesser-Known Aspects - Philadelphia Campaign of 1777
DESCRIPTION:The Association of Philadelphia Tour Guides’ (APT) next monthly meeting will convene on Wednesday\, September 10 at 7 pm with a presentation by Justin B. Clement on the “Lesser-Known Aspects of the Philadelphia Campaign of 1777.” The Philadelphia campaign of 1777 highlights an important irony. At the same time that the Continental Army increasingly professionalized (based on the European model)\, the British Army underwent a process of “Americanization\,” adapting to the terrain and wooded conditions of North America. Eyewitness accounts dramatically demonstrate how this took place\, when put into practice on the battlefield. \n\nLocal history buffs will know about Brandywine\, Paoli\, and Germantown—critical battles of the campaign. However\, less well-known is the four-day British occupation of Valley Forge in September 1777. This encampment of Crown Forces stretched from Fatland Ford to just past French Creek (beyond present-day Phoenixville). The brief military occupation ended with the destruction of Mount Joy Forge—the ironworks on Valley Creek giving Valley Forge its name. Only light skirmishing took place\, but the four days had greater ramifications than previously thought. \nJustin B. Clement is currently the Historic Site Supervisor at Pottsgrove Manor\, a 1752 Georgian-style house that was the home of John Potts\, a prominent ironmaster and politician. For nearly 30 years\, Clement has also been a tailor of museum-quality historic reproductions. Clement’s background also includes serving as: a principal investigator of a study on African American participation at Valley Forge (1777-1778); a research associate on a Georgian Papers Project\, transcribing and editing papers of King George III for Georgian Papers Programme; and an Adjunct History Professor at the College of William and Mary and Thomas Nelson Community College. \nClement has a Master’s Degree in Early American History from the College of William and Mary and a Ph.D. in United States History from the University of California\, Davis. \n\nPLEASE NOTE A NEW LOCATION: The meeting will be in-person at the Independence Visitor Center (6th and Market Streets)\, in the NPS theater on the main floor\, and livestreamed on Zoom. You may bring food and eat in the IVC from 6-7 pm\, but food is not allowed in the theater. The Zoom link will be available in the APT Tour Talk newsletter the week of the meeting; non-members should contact Marianne Ruane president@phillyguides.org no later than 5 pm the day of the meeting to receive the link. SUMMARY:The Frenchest American City - Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:A Walk in the Frenchest City in America! \nAPT member Elise Bromberg has graciously offered to lead a complimentary 90-minute walking tour for members of the Association of Philadelphia Tour Guides (APT). Her tour\, “The French Influence in Philadelphia\,” will be offered on Friday\, September 12\, from 11 am to 12:30 pm. It starts in front of The Thinker sculpture at the Rodin Museum (2151 Ben Franklin Parkway) and ends at the courtyard at City Hall. \nPhiladelphia has the proud distinction of being one of just eight destinations in the United States with its own Michelin Green Guide. Michelin described Philadelphia as the “Frenchest American city.” The editors praise how the city “offers the perfect compromise between American excess and European spirit\, not to mention all the appeal of a city packed with art\, history\, and a cultural effervescence few people expect.” Elise’s tour explains how it all began with the first wave of Huguenot immigrants in William Penn’s time 1685\, to the American Revolutionary War (1775-1783)\, to the émigrés from the reign of terror (French Revolution 1793-1798)\, to the architectural influences in the 1800s-1900s\, to the cultural and culinary influences in more recent to current history. Join Elise to look at the significant historic\, cultural\, architectural\, and culinary French imprints on this beautiful city! \nThe tour is free to APT members and is limited to 5-10 guests. To register\, contact Elise at elisebromberg@hotmail.com. Please join us!

SUMMARY:September Book Club
DESCRIPTION:The Association of Philadelphia Tour Guides (APT) will hold its next Zoom book club meeting on Tuesday\, September 16 at 7 pm. All are welcome to attend. In honor of this year’s Homecoming 250 and the founding of the Navy in Philadelphia\, September’s book club choice is  Six Frigates: The Epic History of the Founding of the U.S. Navy by Ian Toll \nBefore the ink was dry on the U.S. Constitution\, the establishment of a permanent military became the most divisive issue facing the new government. The founders—particularly Jefferson\, Madison\, and Adams—debated fiercely. Would a standing army be the thin end of dictatorship? Would a navy protect from pirates or drain the treasury and provoke hostility? Britain alone had hundreds of powerful warships. \nFrom the decision to build six heavy frigates\, through the cliff-hanger campaign against Tripoli\, to the war that shook the world in 1812\, Ian W. Toll tells this grand tale with the political insight of Founding Brothers and the narrative flair of Patrick O’Brian. \n“A fluent\, intelligent history…give[s] the reader a feel for the human quirks and harsh demands of life at sea.”—New York Times Book Review \nAPT members will find Zoom details in the Tour Talk newsletter the week of the meeting. Non-APT members who would like to participate in the September book club should email APT Secretary Pam Covey at secretary@phillyguides.org no later than 5 pm the day of the meeting to receive the Zoom link.  Please join us!

SUMMARY:Truth Talks at Independence
DESCRIPTION:Members of the Association of Philadelphia Tour Guides (APT) will present a teach-in at various sites within Independence National Historic Park (INHP) on Saturday\, September 20 from 1-4 pm. These free\, short “Truth Talks” will include the history of Blacks and other marginalized groups. Participants can follow a route that starts at the Visitor Center\, continues past the President’s House\, Liberty Bell Center\, and goes behind Congress Hall\, Independence Hall\, and Old City Hall. They can visit all six stops or take in as many as time and interest allow. The stories at each site are not sequential. \nThis public education program is APT’s response to an Executive Order called “Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History” signed by the president on March 27. This order directed the secretary of the Department of the Interior to make sure that displays at national parks do not “inappropriately disparage Americans past or living (including persons living in colonial times).” Instead\, he said\, they are to “focus on the greatness of the achievements and progress of the American people.” \nOn Saturday\, guides will discuss true stories about colonial slavery\, Black resistance and self-determination\, and other underrepresented narratives in early American life. The public is encouraged to attend the Truth Talks to learn a more complete account of our country’s history. \nThe event is free\, nonpartisan\, and family-friendly. No registration is required. SUMMARY:City Hall Tour & Ice Cream Social
DESCRIPTION:The Association of Philadelphia Tour Guides (APT) is arranging a free tour of City Hall on Monday\, October 6.  The tour will start promptly at 12 noon and last approximately 90 minutes.  The tour will focus heavily on the outside of the building so that as tour guides you may gain additional insight and stories as you lead groups through this architectural wonder. It is the world’s largest free standing masonry building. The outside of the building has many hidden treasures that you can share with guests that go unnoticed by the thousands of people that stream through its portals daily. \nThe tour continues inside to see additional rooms (Mayor’s Reception Room\, Conversation Hall\, City Caucus Room\, and City Council) as available. The disclaimer daily is that this is a fully functioning office building; one or more rooms may be off limits due to the city conducting its normal business routines. But there is more to explore in the 1400 acres of space than time will ever allow. \nPlease report to the Visitor Center in the east portal by 11:45 am so that we can start on time. The City Hall tour is limited to 20 guests per tour guide. Please register for the tour by emailing APT Treasurer Antoinette Langeveld treasurer@phillyguides.org. Please register by October 3 so that we can secure an additional guide if registrations go over 20.  \nThe tour is followed by an ice cream social (2-4 pm) at Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams Rittenhouse location\, 1901 Chestnut Street. No registration necessary – just show up\, and bring your friends! 25% of all ice cream purchases during that time will be donated back to APT. Supporting our favorite tour guide association could not be sweeter. \nAttend one or both! We’d love to see you there.

DESCRIPTION:At the next monthly meeting for the Association of Philadelphia Tour Guides (APT)\, on October 8 at 7 pm\, Jack McCarthy will speak about the Poquessing Trail of History\, a project that highlights the rich history of the Byberry neighborhood of Northeast Philadelphia by activating four historic sites along the Poquessing Creek Trail through public programming and historical interpretation and restoration. \nThe trail will highlight\n(1) an interpretive representation of the c. 1690 Benjamin Rush birthplace house\, which stood in Byberry until it was demolished in 1969;\n(2) a memorial to the area’s original inhabitants\, the Lenape;\n(3) the Byberry Township African American Burial Ground\, established in 1780 by Byberry Friends Meeting as a resting place for area free Blacks and people of color; and\n(4) Byberry Hall\, built in 1847 by noted Black abolitionist Robert Purvis and others to host discussions of anti-slavery and other social issues. \nThe project is sponsored by the Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia\, with funding by The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage and the Philadelphia Funder Collaborative for the Semiquincentennial. \nJack McCarthy is a longtime Philadelphia archivist and historian who has held leadership positions at several area historical institutions and directed a number of major archives and public history projects. He is currently directing the Poquessing Trail of History project\, a multi-faceted initiative sponsored by the Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia. \n\n\nThis meeting will also offer a special preview of the new landmark set of three books\, Greater Philadelphia: A New History for the Twenty-First Century\, produced by the team from The Encyclopedia of Greater Philadelphia. The books include Jack McCarthy’s essays on popular music and Philadelphia industries\, among many other topics by hundreds of contributors. One lucky in-person attendee will win a complete set of the books\, donated by the University of Pennsylvania Press! You will also learn how to claim a special discount for APT members.\n\n  \n\nThe meeting will be in-person at Philly’s Gourmet Steaks\, 114 Market Street\, upstairs\, and livestreamed on Zoom. SUMMARY:Nativist/ Bible Riots of 1844
DESCRIPTION:The Association of Philadelphia Tour Guides (APT) will hold its next monthly meeting on Wednesday\, November 12 at 7 pm\, in person at the Great Hall of Christ Church Neighborhood House (20 N. American Street) and livestreamed on Zoom. The meeting kicks off APT’s 2025 Fall Training Program\, “19th Century Growing Pains or We The People… Now What?” Professor Zachary Schrag opens up the program with a presentation on the Nativist/Bible Riots of 1844. Bring food and drinks and come early for social time! \nIn May and July 1844\, Philadelphia suffered some of the bloodiest rioting of the antebellum period\, as anti-immigrant mobs attacked Irish-American homes and Roman Catholic churches before being suppressed by the militia. The violence was part of a wave of riots that convulsed American cities starting in the 1830s. Yet even amid this tumult\, they stand out for their duration\, itself a product of nativist determination to use xenophobia for political gain. In the aftermath of the riots\, shocked Philadelphians began debating new methods of maintaining order\, a discussion that contributed to the consolidation of Philadelphia County in 1854. \nZachary is a professor of history at George Mason University. His book\, The Fires of Philadelphia\, describes these events and their place in history. Today\, in an America beset by polarization and riven over questions of identity and law enforcement\, his book shows us a city—one that embodies the founding of our country—that descended into open warfare and found its way out again. (Early bird pricing for 2026 membership is in effect through December 31.) Zoom meetings are free. Please join us for convivial company\, good food\, fascinating presentations\, and lively discussions.

SUMMARY:19th C. Growing Pains: Workshop of the World
DESCRIPTION:ONLINE SALES HAVE ENDED FOR THIS EVENT. If you would like to attend\, you can pay cash at the door\, $15 member and $25 non-member\, exact change only. Venmo payments will also be available on site.  \nAs part of its 2025 Fall Training Program\, 19th Century Growing Pains or We The People… Now What?\, the Association of Philadelphia Tour Guides (APT) is offering a Lunch & Learn Talk: Workshop of the World on Thursday\, November 13 from 12:30-1:30 pm at Mother Bethel AME Church (419 6th St.). \nAfter the Civil War\, Philadelphia acquired the moniker ‘The Workshop of the World.’ Philadelphia made more stuff than any city in the country – everything from steam engines to ships\, textiles to leather goods\, saws to linoleum\, pocket watch cases to umbrellas\, railroad passenger cars to automobile frames\, and the list goes on. The U.S. Census from the time listed approximately 300 manufactured products\, and Philadelphia produced 90% of them. No other city could match that. There are still many buildings dotting the city’s landscape where all of this labor took place. The present-day neighborhood of Tacony was created by Henry Disston as a worker’s community for the employees of the Disston Saw Works\, the largest of its kind in the world. Preservationist Torben Jenk\, creator of the website The Workshop of the World and a member of Philadelphia’s Oliver Evans Chapter of The Society of Industrial Archeology leads the talk. \nLunch: Arrangements for lunch are to pre-order individually with APT corporate member Campo’s. Order after 5 pm on Wednesday November 12 and before 11 am on Thursday November 13. Use code APT10BETHEL – this will give you 10% off and will indicate that you want your lunch delivered to Mother Bethel by noon on Thursday. Use this link to the online menu to order. If you order before or after that window\, you are not guaranteed to get your meal with the noon delivery to Mother Bethel. \nThe food is scheduled to be dropped off no later than 12 noon. You are also welcome to bring your own food or find something else locally (though there is not a lot of free time to do that without missing an event). \nPlease note that a free Tour of Mother Bethel AME Church\, from 11:30 am-12:30 pm\, will precede the Lunch & Learn. Registration requested. \nCheck out the complete training program description to figure out the best combination of events and pricing for you.
