SUMMARY:Philadelphia’s Quakers in Exile\, 1777-78
DESCRIPTION:The next monthly meeting of the Association of Philadelphia Tour Guides (APT) will be held on Wednesday\, June 10 at 7 pm. APT has invited scholar and historian Ned Donoghue to speak on his book\, Prisoners of Congress: Philadelphia’s Quakers in Exile\, 1777-1778\, which uncovers a Revolutionary War story that is mostly forgotten today. \nDid you know that in 1777\, the Continental Congress condemned Quakers as an internal threat to the new republic? Neighbors quickly became suspects. The book follows four Philadelphia-area families as they are swept into political crisis. Drawing on letters\, diaries\, and official records\, this is the story of 17 Quakers who were forcibly removed from Pennsylvania and imprisoned in Virginia. Stripped of habeas corpus protections\, they became the nation’s first political prisoners. \nNorman E. “Ned” Donoghue II grew up in West Chester and graduated from Williams College and Duke Law School. For 34 years\, he practiced law as a partner at Dechert\, and served five years as a founding fundraiser for both the Princess Grace Foundation-USA in New York City and on staff for The Philadelphia Orchestra Association. Ned writes as an independent scholar/historian. His prime focus has been pacifists during the American Revolution\, but he has recently widened his scope to write a manuscript about Woodrow Wilson. Ned lives in Philadelphia and on the eastern shore of Maryland. You can learn more about Ned here. \nCome early for dinner and drinks! It tests knowledge of the basic facts about the city that any guide giving solid\, professional tours of both the Historic District and Center City would know. \nThe next exam will be held on Saturday\, June 13\, 9-11 am at Philly’s Gourmet Steaks\, 114 Market Street\, upstairs. \nDeadline to register is Thursday\, June 11. Please pay in the APT Store and email the APT President at president@phillyguides.org if you are interested in taking the exam on June 13. We want to make sure we have enough copies! \nThose who paid for the exam previously and didn’t sit for it or did sit for it and didn’t pass do not have to pay the fee again. This will be a two-hour outing with a guided tour for $6. \nHistoric Rittenhouse Town\, located in Philadelphia’s Fairmount Park\, is an historic village featuring seven original buildings dating from the 18th and 19th centuries\, including the 1707 Rittenhouse Homestead and the 1753 Bake House. \nIn 1687\, papermaker William Rittenhouse purchased a plot of land by a tributary of the Wissahickon Creek and with his son\, Nicholas\, built the first paper mill in British North America. For 40 years the Rittenhouse family were the only papermakers in America! Eight generations of the Rittenhouse family lived and worked there for almost 200 years. At its peak in the mid-19th century\, Historic Rittenhouse Town was a self-contained industrial community comprised of about forty buildings which produced paper\, textiles\, and grain. \nToday Historic Rittenhouse Town is a designated National Historic Landmark District that is a museum and education center offering historic tours\, papermaking workshops\, hearth cooking\, demonstrations\, and more. \nScroll down to pay the $6 discounted registration fee. DESCRIPTION:Members of the Association of Philadelphia Tour Guides (APT) will present a teach-in\, HISTORY MATTERS: Free Talks with Tour Guides\, at various sites within Independence National Historic Park (INHP) on Saturday\, June 20 from 1-4 pm. These free\, short significant snippets of history will include the history of Blacks and other marginalized groups. Participants can follow a route that starts at the Visitor Center\, continues past the President’s House\, Liberty Bell Center\, and goes along Chestnut Street to Congress Hall\, Independence Hall\, and Old City Hall. They can visit all five stops or take in as many as time and interest allow. The stories at each site are not sequential. \nThose who would like a little extra explanation and some camaraderie can join free tours that will leave the Independence Visitor Center at 1:15\, 2:15\, and 3:15 pm to escort guests around to all five sites. Look for the APT table and ‘Ask Me’ name tags! \nThis public education program is APT’s response to the March 27\, 2025 executive order “Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History.” This order directed the secretary of the Department of the Interior to make sure that displays at national parks do not “inappropriately disparage Americans past or living (including persons living in colonial times).” Instead\, he said\, they are to “focus on the greatness of the achievements and progress of the American people.” \nTo make sure the full American history is not lost or forgotten\, guides will discuss true stories about colonial slavery\, Black resistance and self-determination\, and other underrepresented narratives in early American life. The public is encouraged to attend the HISTORY MATTERS: Free Talks with Tour Guides to learn a more complete account of our country’s history. \nThe event is free\, nonpartisan\, and family-friendly. During this event\, the bridge will be closed to traffic. The main celebration will take place on the Camden\, NJ side near the Ben Franklin Bridge toll plaza. Attendees will have the opportunity to engage with historical content\, including a pop-up museum highlighting the bridge’s legacy. SUMMARY:The Creation of the American Union with "Ben Franklin's World" Podcaster
DESCRIPTION:The next monthly meeting of the Association of Philadelphia Tour Guides (APT) will be held on Wednesday\, July 15 at 7 pm. (PLEASE NOTE that this is NOT the usual second Wednesday of the month). The meeting will feature Dr. Liz Covart\, a historian of the American Revolution and host of the award-winning podcast Ben Franklin’s World\, who will present her research into the creation of the American union from Common Sense through the ratification of the Articles of Confederation. \nLiz holds a BA from Penn State University and obtained her Master’s and PhD from the University of California\, Davis. Liz’s interests focus on the social and cultural history of the revolution and early republic periods. In 2017\, the Academy of Podcasters awarded Ben Franklin’s World its “Best History Podcast” award. In 2022\, the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution awarded the podcast its first-ever Franklin New Media award. And the Pennsylvania State University History Department awarded Liz a Distinguished Alumni Award in 2022. \nMost episodes of Ben Franklin’s World feature a conversation with a professional historian. Other episodes present narrative storytelling in which multiple people are interviewed. The goal of this project is to create wide\, public awareness about early American history and the work of professional historians by providing convenient access to well-researched\, scholarly history. Since the podcast’s launch in 2014\, listeners have downloaded episodes over 11 million times. Beyond a podcast\, Ben Franklin’s World is also a community of listeners and historians who interact with each other via e-mail\, Twitter\, and in a vibrant Facebook community called “Ben Franklin’s World.” \nCome early for dinner and drinks! DESCRIPTION:The Association of Philadelphia Tour Guides (APT) will hold its next book club meeting on Tuesday\, July 21 at 7 pm on Zoom. The selection is Grave Dealings: Body Snatching in Philadelphia\, 1762-1883 by Tim Dewysockie. (BTW\, Dewysockie will be the speaker at the APT monthly meeting in October – just in time for Halloween!). In the 18th century the first American medical school was established in Philadelphia. Following the model of European universities\, anatomical lectures were conducted with cadavers. But where did the bodies come from? Dissection was viewed as a fate worse than death\, and the only legal source of “stiffs” was executed criminals. But there were not enough. As the medical profession and its need for “anatomical material” grew\, a new\, macabre practice emerged: body snatching. \nBody snatchers secretly obtained bodies from cemeteries and sold them to medical schools for dissection. But how did body snatching work? How did body snatchers and medical schools avoid getting caught\, and what happened when they did? How did the era of the body snatchers end? Grave Dealings: Body Snatching In Philadelphia\, 1762-1883 digs through archives to unearth the forgotten history of a time of graveyard patrols and anatomy riots\, when the dead needed protection from the living. Philadelphia pioneered and became the center of American medical education and practice–and body snatching–in the 18th and 19th centuries. \nThere is no fee to join the book club and everyone is welcome! DESCRIPTION:The Association of Philadelphia Tour Guides (APT) has arranged an outing to see the Independence Seaport Museum‘s new exhibit: Seeking Profit and Power: Philadelphia\, China Trade\, and the Making of America on Tuesday\, July 28 at 10 am. This will be a two-hour visit with a guided tour for $5. \nHave you ever wondered what happened after the United States achieved independence from Britain and lost its dominant trading partner? Independence Seaport Museum’s major new exhibition\, Seeking Profit and Power: Philadelphia\, China Trade\, and the Making of America\, showcases how as a young country we avoided economic isolation by creating a new foreign trade partner in China. It was lucrative. It was risky. And as a newly created nation\, our economic survival depended on it. \nSeeking profit and power\, merchants saw dramatic opportunities to make money from Americans’ desire for Chinese goods like tea\, silk\, and porcelain. The fortunes they built helped expand Philadelphia’s role as a major port and city. Seeking Profit and Power is comprised of roughly 150 objects that have rarely been seen\, many from the late 18th and early 19th centuries. DESCRIPTION:The Association of Philadelphia Tour Guides (APT) written Certification Exam\, based mainly on information in the APT HANDBOOK\, covers the history\, people\, and places of importance in Philadelphia. It tests knowledge of the basic facts about the city that any guide giving solid\, professional tours of both the Historic District and Center City would know. \nThe next exam will be held on Saturday\, September 12\, 9-11 am at Philly’s Gourmet Steaks\, 114 Market Street\, upstairs. \nDeadline to register is Thursday\, September 10. Please pay in the APT Store and email the APT President at president@phillyguides.org if you are interested in taking the exam on September 12. We want to make sure we have enough copies! \nThose who paid for the exam previously and didn’t sit for it or did sit for it and didn’t pass do not have to pay the fee again.
