If you would like to attend\, you can pay cash to Lena\, $15 member and $25 non-member\, exact change only.  \nAs part of its 2025 Fall Training Program\, 19th Century Growing Pains or We The People… Now What?\, the Association of Philadelphia Tour Guides (APT) is offering an Old City in the 19th Century Walking Tour on Thursday\, November 13 from 2-4 pm beginning at Arch Street Meeting House (320 Arch Street) and ending near Christ Church (20 N. American Street). \nAntoinette Langeveld\, APT Treasurer and certified tour guide with Preservation Alliance\, City Hall\, and Powel House will show us Old City in a new light as we shift attention to its 19th century history of industry\, commerce\, immigration\, and social change. Old City is perhaps the one area of Philadelphia which most vividly exhibits the social\, economic\, and architectural changes which have comprised the three hundred years of the city’s history. At first glance\, Old City may appear to be a somewhat motley group of 19th century commercial loft buildings\, and in fact it contains one of the largest and most valuable collections of these structures in the country. But there is much more here than initially meets the eye. DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT IS SOLD OUT.  \nAs part of its 2025 Fall Training Program\, 19th Century Growing Pains or We The People… Now What?\, the Association of Philadelphia Tour Guides (APT) is offering a Bankers’ Row Walking Tour on Thursday\, November 13 from 2-4 pm\, starting at Welcome Park (129 Sansom Walk) and ending at The Corn Exchange (2nd and Chestnut Streets). \nPhiladelphia was an important center of finance until the opening of the Erie Canal in 1825\, when the center shifted to New York City. The industrialization\, expansion to the west\, and changes in transportation from turnpikes to canals to railroads in the 1820s started the change\, helped by coal\, and later oil. This tour covers the financial beginnings in the U.S.: state banking to First Bank\, Second Bank\, and 1st National Bank; the 1790s to the Civil War; A.J. Drexel\, and the Customs House. Venmo payments will also be available on site.  \nAs part of its 2025 Fall Training Program\, 19th Century Growing Pains or We The People… Now What?\, the Association of Philadelphia Tour Guides (APT) is offering a Lunch & Learn Talk: Workshop of the World on Thursday\, November 13 from 12:30-1:30 pm at Mother Bethel AME Church (419 6th St.). \nAfter the Civil War\, Philadelphia acquired the moniker ‘The Workshop of the World.’ Philadelphia made more stuff than any city in the country – everything from steam engines to ships\, textiles to leather goods\, saws to linoleum\, pocket watch cases to umbrellas\, railroad passenger cars to automobile frames\, and the list goes on. The U.S. Census from the time listed approximately 300 manufactured products\, and Philadelphia produced 90% of them. No other city could match that. There are still many buildings dotting the city’s landscape where all of this labor took place. The present-day neighborhood of Tacony was created by Henry Disston as a worker’s community for the employees of the Disston Saw Works\, the largest of its kind in the world. Preservationist Torben Jenk\, creator of the website The Workshop of the World and a member of Philadelphia’s Oliver Evans Chapter of The Society of Industrial Archeology leads the talk. \nLunch: Arrangements for lunch are to pre-order individually with APT corporate member Campo’s. Order after 5 pm on Wednesday November 12 and before 11 am on Thursday November 13. Founded by Richard Allen\, who overcame slavery to establish this pivotal institution\, the church has long been a beacon for racial equality and civil rights. Over centuries\, it has served the spiritual\, educational\, and civic needs of the African American community\, symbolizing resilience and faith while expanding its influence globally to 39 countries. \nDuring your visit\, you will tour the Richard Allen Museum and the treasured sanctuary and stained glass collection. You will have the opportunity to see a collection of personal items of Richard and Sarah Allen as well as objects that have been in the church’s possession from its founding in 1794. It begins at the President’s House and discusses Ona Judge; James Forten; Euphemia Williams who was accused of being a fugitive slave and won her court case; Dinah Nevil\, a Lenape woman who insisted she was free and was helped by the Society of Friends; musician Frank Johnson; Sarah Ash and Rachel Myers who lived at an Underground Railroad site; William Still and Benezet Hall; and ends at Mother Bethel AME Church after covering the Gibbs brothers who worked on the third Mother Bethel building. The tour will also delve into other significant aspects of 18th- and 19th-century religious history in Philadelphia\, such as the wave of religious fervor during the Second Great Awakening and the bitter struggle over slavery that divided many religious communities.
