The group will walk over together following the morning’s panel discussion; those not attending the morning discussion can meet us at Philly’s Gourmet Steaks at 10:30 am to walk over with us or meet us at the museum at 10:45 am.\n\nWhile attendees will be able to visit all of the exhibits in the museum\, we will mostly focus our attention on the museum’s second floor exhibit\, “Tides of Freedom: African-American Presence on the Delaware River.” This exhibit was curated by Dr. Tukufu Zuberi\, one of our speakers for the morning discussion on the parallel lives of James Forten and Stephen Girard. Focusing on four critical periods in Philadelphia’s history: Enslavement\, Emancipation\, Jim Crow\, and Civil Rights\, “Tides of Freedom” urges visitors to think about the concept of freedom both historically and in today’s world through the lens of the African experience along the Delaware. \nThis event is included in the complete package. DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT IS SOLD OUT. \nAs part of its 2025 Fall Training Program\, 19th Century Growing Pains or We The People… Now What?\, the Association of Philadelphia Tour Guides (APT) is offering a talk about The Parallel Lives of James Forten and Stephen Girard on Sunday\, November 16 from 9-10:30 am at Philly’s Gourmet Steaks on the 2nd floor. \nThis talk\, led by Katherine Haas\, Director of Historical Resources at Girard College and Dr. Tukufu Zuberi\, the Lasry Family Professor of Race Relations and Professor of Sociology and Africana Studies at the University of Pennsylvania\, will cover Stephen Girard and James Forten\, both self-made men who achieved enormous wealth in the maritime trade in Philadelphia during the 19th century. Both were well-regarded by many across racial and social divides\, with thousands attending each of their funerals. While both were philanthropic\, their causes and reasoning for support differed greatly. \nStephen Girard – merchant\, banker and landowner – was the wealthiest man in American when he died in 1831. In an unprecedented act of philanthropy\, he left his fortune to establish Girard College\, originally endowed to educate “poor\, white male orphans.”  This presentation will offer a glimpse into the complex life of America’s first multi-millionaire and illuminate the legacy of a school which has fascinated visitors since the 19th century. \nIt turns out that besides being parallel\, their lives also intersected: Girard did not buy his sails from Forten’s shop\, but Forten did business at Girard’s Bank. By the turn of the 19th century\, Philadelphia was home to slaves and slave owners. It was considered the most conservative city in the country. It was a city that hosted immigrants and American Nativists. It was a divided city that voted for Abraham Lincoln in 1860. It was a vibrant city\, the second largest in America. This talk is an overview of the 19th century evolution of Philadelphia up to and including the Civil War. Talk will be given by APT member Jim Mundy\, certified tour guide and former historian of the Union League. \nOur lunch is provided courtesy of Miles Table. In 1804\, outside of Paris\, Pere Lachaise Cemetery begain what would be known as the rural landscaped cemetery movement. In Philadelphia\, in 1836\, John Jay Smith charted the Laurel Hill Cemetery\, along the Ridge Pike\, as Philadelphia’s first such cemetery. Today\, Laurel Hill East\, as it is known\, occupies approximately 78 acres of landscaped land that contains the graves of some of the city’s most prominent and important 19th century citizens\, including industrialists\, financiers\, Civil War generals\, mayors\, and architects. The industrialization\, expansion to the west\, and changes in transportation from turnpikes to canals to railroads in the 1820s started the change\, helped by coal\, and later oil. This tour covers the financial beginnings in the U.S.: state banking to First Bank\, Second Bank\, and 1st National Bank; the 1790s to the Civil War; A.J. Drexel\, and the Customs House. Venmo payments will also be available on site.  \nAs part of its 2025 Fall Training Program\, 19th Century Growing Pains or We The People… Now What?\, the Association of Philadelphia Tour Guides (APT) is offering a Lunch & Learn Talk: Workshop of the World on Thursday\, November 13 from 12:30-1:30 pm at Mother Bethel AME Church (419 6th St.). \nAfter the Civil War\, Philadelphia acquired the moniker ‘The Workshop of the World.’ Philadelphia made more stuff than any city in the country – everything from steam engines to ships\, textiles to leather goods\, saws to linoleum\, pocket watch cases to umbrellas\, railroad passenger cars to automobile frames\, and the list goes on. The U.S. Census from the time listed approximately 300 manufactured products\, and Philadelphia produced 90% of them. No other city could match that. There are still many buildings dotting the city’s landscape where all of this labor took place. The present-day neighborhood of Tacony was created by Henry Disston as a worker’s community for the employees of the Disston Saw Works\, the largest of its kind in the world. Preservationist Torben Jenk\, creator of the website The Workshop of the World and a member of Philadelphia’s Oliver Evans Chapter of The Society of Industrial Archeology leads the talk. \nLunch: Arrangements for lunch are to pre-order individually with APT corporate member Campo’s. Order after 5 pm on Wednesday November 12 and before 11 am on Thursday November 13.
