DESCRIPTION:ONLINE REGISTRATIONS FOR THIS VISIT ARE CLOSED. Please text APT member Judy Smith with any questions or problems day of 609-670-4783.  \nThe Association of Philadelphia Tour Guides (APT) has arranged a visit to Historic Rittenhouse Town on Monday\, June 15 at 11 am. This will be a two-hour outing with a guided tour for $6. \nHistoric Rittenhouse Town\, located in Philadelphia’s Fairmount Park\, is an historic village featuring seven original buildings dating from the 18th and 19th centuries\, including the 1707 Rittenhouse Homestead and the 1753 Bake House. \nIn 1687\, papermaker William Rittenhouse purchased a plot of land by a tributary of the Wissahickon Creek and with his son\, Nicholas\, built the first paper mill in British North America. For 40 years the Rittenhouse family were the only papermakers in America! Eight generations of the Rittenhouse family lived and worked there for almost 200 years. At its peak in the mid-19th century\, Historic Rittenhouse Town was a self-contained industrial community comprised of about forty buildings which produced paper\, textiles\, and grain. \nToday Historic Rittenhouse Town is a designated National Historic Landmark District that is a museum and education center offering historic tours\, papermaking workshops\, hearth cooking\, demonstrations\, and more. \nScroll down to pay the $6 discounted registration fee. Deadline to sign up is Sunday\, June 14 at midnight. Contact APT Director-at-Large vpmccafferty@msn.com with any questions. Join us for an enlightening and fun day! \n  \nPhoto by Al Cassidy\, courtesy of Historic Rittenhouse Town.

SUMMARY:Victorian Christmas at Ebenezer Maxwell Mansion
DESCRIPTION:The Association of Philadelphia Tour Guides (APT) has arranged a Victorian Christmas visit to the Ebenezer Maxwell Mansion (200 W. Tulpehocken Street\, Philadelphia\, PA 19144) on Friday December 5 at 12 pm. Surrounded by lavish gardens that reveal the minds of people living in a world of industrialization and social change\, the mansion has been painstakingly restored to reveal the thoughts and minds of Philadelphia’s rising middle class in the period from the 1860’s to the 1910’s. Learn about the lives of the people who lived here\, upstairs and downstairs. \nCome see the mansion decorated with authentic Victorian holiday trimmings. Hear about the invention of ideas like giving gifts\, special foods\, and literature that celebrated Old St. Nick and the more modern idea of Santa Clause. SUMMARY:The Frenchest American City - Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:A Walk in the Frenchest City in America! \nAPT member Elise Bromberg has graciously offered to lead a complimentary 90-minute walking tour for members of the Association of Philadelphia Tour Guides (APT). Her tour\, “The French Influence in Philadelphia\,” will be offered on Friday\, September 12\, from 11 am to 12:30 pm. It starts in front of The Thinker sculpture at the Rodin Museum (2151 Ben Franklin Parkway) and ends at the courtyard at City Hall. \nPhiladelphia has the proud distinction of being one of just eight destinations in the United States with its own Michelin Green Guide. Michelin described Philadelphia as the “Frenchest American city.” The editors praise how the city “offers the perfect compromise between American excess and European spirit\, not to mention all the appeal of a city packed with art\, history\, and a cultural effervescence few people expect.” Elise’s tour explains how it all began with the first wave of Huguenot immigrants in William Penn’s time 1685\, to the American Revolutionary War (1775-1783)\, to the émigrés from the reign of terror (French Revolution 1793-1798)\, to the architectural influences in the 1800s-1900s\, to the cultural and culinary influences in more recent to current history. Join Elise to look at the significant historic\, cultural\, architectural\, and culinary French imprints on this beautiful city! \nThe tour is free to APT members and is limited to 5-10 guests. To register\, contact Elise at elisebromberg@hotmail.com. Please join us!

SUMMARY:Wild Foodies Foraging Tour 'Plants on the Pier'
DESCRIPTION:Online registration is now CLOSED. If you would like to attend\, you can show up at the start location with $10 cash.  \nTours in Philadelphia are not only about history and ghosts! With the greater number of guests to the city expected during the upcoming anniversaries and big events\, the Association of Philadelphia Tour Guides (APT) would like to encourage members to expand the definition of tour and tour guide. Any exploration of the city in an area or field that you are passionate about can become a tour! A stellar example of this is APT corporate member Lady Danni Morinich’s wild foodies foraging tour ‘Plants on the Pier’ which she is leading privately for us on Saturday\, June 15 from 10 am to 12 noon. Join us to explore the edible and medicinal uses of plants – available right under our feet in this urban environment – along with plant history\, legend\, and lore. \nWashington Avenue Green is generally regarded as a path linking Washington Avenue and Pier 70\, used by runners and cyclists. But this waterside locale is home to a myriad of wild\, edible\, and medicinal plants. We’ll start the tour where the trail begins\, then we’ll proceed on the path\, working our way down the pier covering the edible and medicinal uses of the plants\, along with plant history\, legend\, and lore. We’ll be discussing uses of oak\, redbud\, holly\, and mugwort. You’ll also be privy to the perfect spot to harvest mulberries a little later in the summer. And with a little luck\, a few ripe juneberries. \nLady Danni Morinich is the Proprietress of Landed Gentress Handcrafted Herbals. She is passionate about foraging and using herbs and foraged finds in her creations. She is a member of the American Herbalist Guild and the American Botanical Council. SUMMARY:Tour of Cliveden
DESCRIPTION:The Association of Philadelphia Tour Guides (APT) kicks off a series of visits to sites in Historic Germantown with a tour of Cliveden (6401 Germantown Ave.) on Friday\, May 10\, at 10:30 am. Cliveden was originally built as a country home for attorney Benjamin Chew. Completed in 1767\, the property was home to seven generations of the Chew family and labor staff. \nCliveden has long been famous as the site of the Battle of Germantown 1777\, as well as for its Georgian architecture. New research is unearthing a more complicated history at Cliveden\, which involves layers of significance\, including the lives of those who were enslaved by and in service to the Chew family. This information broadens the meaning of Cliveden as a preserved historic place\, exploring the themes and stories of American identity and freedom. Traces of the history of the Cliveden property and its occupants can be found throughout the five-and-a-half-acre woody landscape. \nPlease email APT Director-at-Large Vince McCafferty to register (if possible by May 3) so we may give the site a headcount. The cost of the tour is $10\, payable in cash on the day of the tour. Attendees are invited to gather for lunch after the tour at Valley Green Inn (Valley Green Road in Wissahickon Valley Park; click here for directions). If you would like to join in\, please let Vince know in your reply so reservations can be made. \n
