Zoom Presentation on Sustainable Tourism
February 21 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
Please note new time: 10 am – 12 pm.
The Association of Philadelphia Tour Guides (APT), in collaboration with Guild of Professional Tour Guides of Washington, DC, is organizing a webinar on sustainable tourism. Every year the World Federation of Tourist Guide Associations (WFTGA) picks a theme for Feb. 21 International Tourist Guide Day. The 2024 theme is: Tourist Guides – Our Guardians in promoting and encouraging Green Tourism.
Sustainable tourism takes full account of current and future economic, social and environmental impacts, addressing the needs of visitors, the industry, the environment and host communities. This presentation features Dr. Birendra KC, an Associate Professor of the Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management at the University of North Texas, and Vance Lehmkuhl, former eco-journalist and current tour director for the (APT corporate member) American Vegan Center in Philadelphia.
The two will cover emerging trends in the world of sustainable tourism from a variety of standpoints. Dr. Birendra KC will share perspectives on topics such as community-based tourism, protected area management in nature-based tourism, tourism entrepreneurship, and ways that an intimate visitor experience can dovetail with important restoration work. Lehmkuhl will explore recent innovations in hospitality and virtual tourism, and will make the case for plant-based food promotion as a key sustainable practice for all forms of tourism. He will also look at how sustainability-based content can both inform and inspire travelers to further adventures.
The event is free, but participants must register to receive the Zoom link. The event will be recorded and sent to all participants. Please join us!
