Tour: The Vegetarian Legacy of Benjamin Lay

August 17, 2022 @ 11:00 am - 12:30 pm

To complement the Association of Philadelphia Tour Guides (APT) August 16 book club selection The Fearless Benjamin Lay, APT member Vance Lehmkuhl is leading a tour on Wednesday, August 17, at 11 am, “The Vegetarian Legacy of Benjamin Lay.”

Benjamin Lay’s abolitionist activism had social repercussions down through the US civil war. But his vegetarianism, which for Lay was cut from the same cloth, also impacted history through his influence on US vegetarian activists such as Anthony Benezet, John Woolman, Joshua Evans, Sarah & Angelina Grimke, Bronson Alcott and Dr. William Alcott.

Join us at the American Vegan Center (17 N. 2nd St. in Old City, across from Christ Church) for a 76-minute walking tour. We’ll explore these fascinating, lesser-known histories and how they fit together with other social justice issues to tell the story of the growth of vegetarianism in the US, just one part of the legacy of Benjamin Lay.

Fee: $10. Those who wish to pay ahead of time online can register at https://americanvegan.org/events/the-vegetarian-legacy-of-benjamin-lay/. Those who wish to pay cash at the event must email to register.
