“Storytelling from the Archives” by history professor Kenneth Finkel

February 10 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

A recording of the talk is available on the APT Facebook page and APT YouTube channel

On Wed. February 10, the Association of Philadelphia Tour Guides (APT) will kick off its monthly meeting at 7 pm with a lecture, “Storytelling from the Archives,” by Temple University history professor Kenneth Finkel.

For nearly a decade, Ken Finkel has been “excavating” and researching images from the city archives and presenting his findings at the PhillyHistory blog. Some were presented in his 2018 book, Insight Philadelphia. Many more – 285 in all – are available online at https://blog.phillyhistory.org/. In this illustrated talk, Ken will share highlights, quirks, and discoveries of his archival meanderings.

Kenneth Finkel, Temple University Professor in the Department of History, specializes in Philadelphia. He started out as Curator of Prints and Photographs at the Library Company of Philadelphia and honed his historic/civic voice as an occasional contributor to the Philadelphia Inquirer’s op-ed page in the 1980s. For the last decade, Finkel has written regularly at the PhillyHistory blog. His books include Nineteenth-Century Photography in Philadelphia (1980), The Philadelphia Almanac and Citizens’ Manual (1993 and 1994) and Insight Philadelphia (Rutgers University Press, 2018).

Following the talk will be the APT meeting and some social time on zoom. APT meetings are open to aspiring and working tour guides as well as anyone with an interest in Philadelphia-focused history. For the foreseeable future all meetings are free for anyone and all are welcome!

APT has decided to waive 2021 membership fees for all 2020 members. New members are welcome to register for 2021 on the APT website. https://phillyguides.org/apt-membership-2/

THE FEBRUARY APT MEETING WILL BE VIRTUAL, ON ZOOM.
