New APT Book Club

February 15 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

The inaugural session of the first ever book club run by the Association of Philadelphia Tour Guides (APT) is set for Tuesday February 15 at 7 pm, on Zoom. The first book will be How The Word is Passed: A Reckoning with the History of Slavery Across America by Clint Smith. Anyone with an interest in the book is welcome; participants do not have to be members of APT. No registration or payment is required. Please come prepared to discuss the book.

The book is a deeply researched and transporting exploration of the legacy of slavery told by tour guides. The book illustrates how some of our country’s most essential stories are hidden in plain view, and how America remembers and distorts its slavery past. Smith traveled to 8 places in the U.S. and one abroad to understand the history of American slavery. Each place is a portrait of a place, and also the people in that place.

Contact Board Director-at-Large Annie Leguennec with any questions or future book suggestions.
