History Tour of Woman’s Medical College and Hahnemann Medical College

March 27, 2022 @ 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm

Join us for a behind-the-scenes tour of the Legacy Center Archives at Drexel Med School, which holds the historical records of two longtime Philly institutions: Woman’s Medical College (the nation’s first all-female degree-granting medical school) and Hahnemann Medical College (the nation’s first homeopathic medical school).

The tour will focus on a wide variety of Philly-specific stories, individuals, and places that shine light on 170+ years of women’s activism as well as medicine and medical education in Philly. We’ll feature stories like:

  • What happened at Pennsylvania Hospital in 1869 when women med students had the audacity to attend a lecture that had been men-only, and the men’s ungentlemanly behavior, covered with great emotion in dozens of newspaper articles.
  • How networks of Black doctors and med students mentored and supported each other, and organized to provide care for Philly’s Black communities starting in the late 19th century.
  • and many other stories!

The event will take place at Drexel College of Medicine in East Falls (2900 West Queen Lane, Philadelphia, PA 19129) – easy by car or SEPTA. Directions and tips will be provided to find your way to our door.

We ask that you register as soon as possible! Tours are limited to 15 people, so enough are interested, we can add a second one. We won’t be able to do that at the last minute though. Absolute last day to register is Thursday March 24; email Marianne at .  The Association of Philadelphia Tour Guides (APT) will cover payment for the event and additional donations are welcome.
