Field Trip to Harrisburg

October 6, 2022

Save the date!

The Association of Philadelphia Tour Guides (APT) is planning a trip to Harrisburg on Thursday, October 6, during William Penn’s birthday month. This is still a work in progress.

Tentative plans so far are:

— 1:15-2:15 pm: Guided tour of the State Capitol Building featuring Violet Oakley Murals at the Pennsylvania State Capitol with historian Jason Wilson.

— 2:30-3:30 pm: Visit the Pennsylvania State Museum to see Hannah Callowhill Penn’s famous (and infamous) portrait and other artifacts with curator Amy Hammond. (Featured photo shows former Gov. Tom Corbett and first lady Susan Corbett unveiling the Hannah Penn portrait in 2014.)

— 4-4:45 pm: Guided look at the Commonwealth Monument with Lenwood Sloan, the director of the Commonwealth Monument Project.

Other possibilities:

— Guided visit to the archives to see the Penn’s Pennsylvania Charter

— Walking tour

No lunch is planned. Some members may choose to arrive early and have lunch in Harrisburg. All sites and monument are within walking distance from each other and to/from the train station. Transportation arranged individually. Amtrak train, Greyhound bus, Mega Bus and, of course, driving and/or car-pooling are options.
