Book Club for October
October 18 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
The next session of the book club run by the Association of Philadelphia Tour Guides (APT) is set for Tuesday October 18 at 7 pm, on Zoom. The book will be The Lady of Sing Sing by Idanna Pucci. Anyone with an interest in the book is welcome; participants do not have to be members of APT. No registration or payment is required. Please come prepared to discuss the book.
This is historical non-fiction. In summary, it is about a woman whose family immigrated to the United States, and in 1895, due to an incompetent attorney and crooked judge, she was convicted of murdering her husband. She was the first woman jailed in Sing Sing and the first woman slated to be executed in the electric chair.
The story has many different layers including descriptions of discrimination against immigrants and women and also stark contrast of the benefits bestowed on the wealthy – benefits that allow a wealthy person to ultimately help the main character of this story.
The book is very different from what has been read so far in the book club but APT member Christine Suhadolnik found it extremely interesting and impactful.
The zoom link will go out in the President’s email of the week of the book club.
