Revolutions for 18th Century Women
March 8 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

The Association of Philadelphia Tour Guides holds its next monthly meeting on Wednesday March 8 at 7 pm. The meeting will be in person at Philly’s Gourmet Steaks, 114 Market Street – come early to grab food or a drink! APT member George Boudreau will kick off the meeting with his presentation, “Revolutions for 18th Century Women.” His talk grows out of his experience co-editing the book Women in George Washington’s World (UVA Press, 2022) (featured in APT’s March book club meeting) and working with a group of historians from around the country. Many of the women whose biographies are in this book inhabited the spaces APT members interpret today, and their experiences should shape the ways we talk about the past.
Eighteenth-century women experienced a number of revolutions. Each was affected by the American War for Independence, many taking active roles in the military conflict itself and supporting the military in various ways. But these revolutions also included changes in patterns of family life and child rearing, in social roles, in the nature of slavery and freedom, and in the ideas that they shaped and experienced.
Dr. George Boudreau is an APT member, historian, and author, whose published work includes Independence: A Guide to Historic Philadelphia. From 1996-98, he served as historic site manager and director of programs at Powel House, where he oversaw the restoration of all museum rooms and an expanded interpretation of the site. He is a nationally certified interpreter, currently working on a book entitled Interpreting Historic Sites.
Following the presentation will be a short business meeting and some social time.
APT meetings are open to aspiring and working tour guides as well as anyone with an interest in Philadelphia-focused history. Attend one meeting for free and then it is $50 to join the association for the year or $10 per monthly meeting in-person event. Zoom meetings are free. Please join us for convivial company, good food, fascinating presentations, and lively discussions.
The meeting will also be livestreamed on Zoom. The link will be shared in the APT President’s email the week of the meeting.
